5:1 民とその妻たちから、同胞のユダの人々に対して大きな訴えの叫びがあがった。 5:2 ある者は言った。「わたしたちには多くの息子や娘がいる。食べて生き延びるために穀物がほしい。」 5:3 またある者は言った。「この飢饉のときに穀物を得るには畑も、ぶどう園も、家も抵当に入れなければならない。」 5:4 またある者は言った。「王が税をかけるので、畑もぶどう園も担保にして金を借りなければならない。 5:5 同胞もわたしたちも同じ人間だ。彼らに子供があれば、わたしたちにも子供がある。だが、わたしたちは息子や娘を手放して奴隷にしなければならない。ある娘はもう奴隷になっている。どうすることもできない。畑とぶどう園はもう他人のものだ。」 5:6 この嘆きと訴えを聞いて、わたしは大いに憤りを覚え、 5:7 居たたまれなくなって貴族と役人をこう非難した。「あなたたちは同胞に重荷を負わせているではないか。」わたしはまた大きな集会を召集して、 5:8 言った。「わたしたちは異邦人に売られていた同胞のユダの人々を、できるかぎり買い戻した。それなのに、あなたたちはその同胞を売ろうというのか。彼らはわたしたち自身に売られることになるのに。」彼らは黙りこみ、何も言えなかった。 5:9 わたしは言った。「あなたたちの行いはよくない。敵である異邦人に辱められないために、神を畏れて生きるはずではないのか。 5:10 わたしも、わたしの兄弟も部下も金や穀物を貸している。わたしたちはその負債を帳消しにする。 5:11 あなたたちも今日あなたたちに負債のある者に返しなさい。畑も、ぶどう園も、オリーブ園も、家も、利子も、穀物も、ぶどう酒も、油も。」 5:12 彼らはそれに答えた。「返します。何も要求しません。お言葉どおりにします。」わたしはこの言葉どおり行うよう誓わせるために祭司たちを呼んだ。 5:13 わたしはまた衣の折り重ねたところを振るいながら言った。「この約束を守らない者はだれでも、このように神によってその家と財産から離され、振るい落とされるように。このように振るい落とされて無一物となるように。」会衆は皆で、「アーメン」と答え、神を賛美した。民はその言葉どおり行った。 5:14 アルタクセルクセス王の第二十年に、わたしはユダの地の長官に任命されたが、その日から第三十二年までの十二年間、わたしも兄弟たちも長官の給与を一度も受け取らなかった。 5:15 わたしの前任者は民に重荷を負わせ、パンとぶどう酒に加えて、銀四十シェケルを徴収した。彼らの配下の者も民を圧迫した。しかし、わたしは神を畏れ、そのようなことを決して行わなかった。 5:16 わたしはこの城壁の工事にも力を注ぎ、土地を買収したりはしなかった。配下の者も皆、工事のためにここに集まっていた。 5:17 ユダの人々と役人合わせて百五十人、それに周りの国々から来た人々も、わたしの食卓に着いた。 5:18 毎日用意されたものは、牛一頭、特選の羊六匹、鳥で、わたしのために用意され、十日ごとにはあらゆる種類のぶどう酒が十分用意された。だが、このためにも長官の手当を要求しなかった。再建作業がこの民にとって重荷となっていたからである。 5:19 神よ、わたしがこの民に尽くしたすべてのことを快く心に留めてください。
[ 5 ] 5:1 And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren. 5:2 For there were those who said, "We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live." 5:3 There were also some who said, "We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine." 5:4 There were also those who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our lands and vineyards. 5:5 "Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards." 5:6 And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. 5:7 After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, "Each of you is exacting usury from his brother." So I called a great assembly against them. 5:8 And I said to them, "According to our ability we have redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?" Then they were silenced and found nothing to say. 5:9 Then I said, "What you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?" 5:10 "I also, with my brethren and my servants, am lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop this usury! 5:11 "Restore now to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also a hundredth of the money and the grain, the new wine and the oil, that you have charged them." 5:12 So they said, "We will restore it, and will require nothing from them; we will do as you say." Then I called the priests, and required an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. 5:13 Then I shook out the fold of my garment and said, "So may God shake out each man from his house, and from his property, who does not perform this promise. Even thus may he be shaken out and emptied." And all the assembly said, "Amen!" and praised the Lord. Then the people did according to this promise. 5:14 Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor's provisions. 5:15 But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of the fear of God. 5:16 Indeed, I also continued the work on this wall, and we did not buy any land. All my servants were gathered there for the work. 5:17 And at my table were one hundred and fifty Jews and rulers, besides those who came to us from the nations around us. 5:18 Now that which was prepared daily was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine. Yet in spite of this I did not demand the governor's provisions, because the bondage was heavy on this people. 5:19 Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

7:17 "But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 7:18 "till another king arose who did not know Joseph. 7:19 "This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, making them expose their babies, so that they might not live. 7:20 "At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father's house for three months. 7:21 "But when he was set out, Pharaoh's daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. 7:22 "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds. 7:23 "Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 7:24 "And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 7:25 "For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. 7:26 "And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, 'Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?' 7:27 "But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 7:28 'Do you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?' 7:29 "Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he had two sons. 7:30 "And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai. 7:31 "When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, 7:32 "saying, 'I am the God of your fathers-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and dared not look. 7:33 'Then the Lord said to him, "Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 7:34 "I have surely seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt." ' 7:35 "This Moses whom they rejected, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. 7:36 "He brought them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years. 7:37 "This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear.' 7:38 "This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us, 7:39 "whom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, 7:40 "saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.' 7:41 "And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 7:42 "Then God turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets:'Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness,O house of Israel? 7:43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch,And the star of your god Remphan,Images which you made to worship;And I will carry you away beyond Babylon.'
